Quentin Grimes said his offseason regimen has centered on shooting from the corners and orchestrating pick-and-rolls as he prepares for a significant role with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Speaking on ESPN LA’s “Mason & Ireland,” the 25-year-old guard noted that playing next to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves will require him to be both a floor-spacer and secondary playmaker. Grimes, who spent the past two seasons with Dallas and Philadelphia, explained that Doncic’s ability to create open looks influenced his summer priorities. “You have to understand who you’re sharing the floor with,” he said, adding that consistent corner three-point shooting and decision-making out of ball screens have been at the top of his workout list.
Grimes averaged double-figure scoring the last two years and believes that experience showcased his full offensive game, including driving into the paint and setting up teammates. Since arriving in Los Angeles, he has already logged sessions with the Lakers’ player-development staff to sharpen those skills.
Defense remains another focal point. Head coach Darvin Ham is expected to ask Grimes to handle assignments previously shouldered by Marcus Smart, who regularly guarded opponents’ top perimeter threats last season. Grimes said he welcomes the challenge of becoming one of the Lakers’ primary stoppers while maintaining the offensive responsibilities the team envisions for him.
The Lakers reshaped their backcourt and wing rotations during the summer, and Grimes is projected to move into the starting lineup when training camp opens. How quickly he translates his offseason work into game situations could influence the club’s prospects when the 2026–27 season tips off.
