ORLANDO — Forward Paolo Banchero says Orlando’s string of first-round playoff exits is driving his offseason preparation as the Magic aim for a longer run in 2026-27.

Speaking on a live edition of “The Stephen A. Smith Show” last week, the 23-year-old former No. 1 overall pick said three consecutive early eliminations have heightened his urgency. “The sense of urgency is definitely there,” Banchero noted, adding that his focus this summer has been on postseason success and “getting past the first round.”

Banchero, who missed 34 games in 2024-25 with an oblique injury and sat out 10 contests last season because of a groin strain, emphasized conditioning. “Being in elite shape” is his top priority, he said, explaining that he is challenging himself physically and mentally to handle the 82-game schedule and an extended playoff push.

Summer League Highlights

The Magic finished 4-1 in Las Vegas, and assistant coach DJ Bakker pointed to 2025 draftees Noah Penda and Jase Richardson as key contributors.

  • Penda averaged 15.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.7 blocks and 1.2 steals, shooting 47.1% from three in three appearances. Bakker praised his competitiveness, shot selection and defensive versatility.
  • Richardson posted 18.3 points, 4.7 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game across the tournament.

Lester Quinones Makes Two-Way Case

Guard Lester Quinones, 25, strengthened his bid for a two-way contract after averaging 14.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 22.6 minutes over five Summer League games, shooting .521/.435/.833. Last season with the G League’s Osceola Magic, the three-year NBA veteran earned All-NBAGL First Team honors by putting up 22.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 50 contests.

Vucevic Plans to Keep Playing

Center Nikola Vucevic, who rejoined Orlando this summer on a one-year veteran-minimum deal, told HoopsHype he does not intend to retire after the upcoming season. “No, not yet,” the two-time All-Star wrote when asked about the possibility of ending his career in 2026-27.

Orlando opens training camp this fall with expectations of climbing beyond the first round for the first time since 2023.
