The Utah Jazz and fourth-year center Walker Kessler are unlikely to finalize a rookie-scale extension before the 2025-26 regular season tips off, league sources told The Athletic.

Team and player representatives met several times during the summer, and Utah has issued a formal proposal. However, negotiations have stalled and the two sides remain far apart on terms, the report said.

If no agreement is reached this fall, the 7-footer will enter restricted free agency in July 2026 with a projected cap hold of $14.9 million. Any extension completed now would start at a higher salary, reducing the club’s spending flexibility next offseason.

Utah’s front office views Kessler, 24, as one of the NBA’s premier defensive centers and a key part of its long-term plans. Still, delaying a deal offers cap benefits the franchise appears unwilling to forfeit.

The Los Angeles Lakers—who have previously shown interest in Kessler—are among several clubs expected to have cap space in 2026, according to the report. With potential suitors looming, the Jazz are expected to determine a comfortable price point and be ready with an offer when free agency opens.

Kessler could post bigger numbers this year as he is slated for major minutes on a rebuilding roster. In 58 appearances last season, the former Auburn standout averaged career highs of 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, 1.7 assists and 0.6 steals.
