While recent reports suggested the 41-year-old had all the information necessary to pick his next team, league sources who spoke with Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor believe a blockbuster trade could still sway his choice. Those insiders think acquiring Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving would strengthen a club’s bid for James.
The scenario remains unlikely. According to O’Connor, Dallas has no interest in trading Irving, and Washington has shown the same reluctance regarding Davis. Davis becomes eligible for an extension on August 6, and some around the league believe he could pursue a larger deal from the Wizards than he would seek from a contender, leaving the franchise with a decision to make down the line.
Golden State is the only known LeBron suitor reported to have explored a trade for Davis this offseason. However, Joe Vardon of The Athletic reports multiple Washington sources have no desire to accept Jimmy Butler in any potential package for the All-Star forward.
Vardon also refuted speculation that James previously chose a destination, reversed course, and restarted the process. Individuals close to the four-time MVP told The Athletic that narrative is false.
Hezonja expects clean NBA exit
Spanish outlet reports hinted that Mario Hezonja’s planned NBA return might be complicated by language in his opt-out clause with Real Madrid. BasketNews’ Donatas Urbonas countered that claim, noting Hezonja and his representatives are confident all requirements to activate the clause have been met. The forward anticipates signing an NBA deal—and not a non-guaranteed contract aimed at a quick release. According to Urbonas, Hezonja rejected conditional offers from three EuroLeague clubs that would have depended on an early NBA exit.
Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line identified Cleveland as one of the teams monitoring Hezonja. One league source told the publication that as many as eight or nine free agents, potentially including Hezonja, could reach agreements shortly after James announces his decision.
Kuminga market tied to LeBron timeline
Jonathan Kuminga’s situation is another that may hinge on James’ choice. Stein and Fischer report that Atlanta will be selective in any sign-and-trade discussions involving the restricted free agent. If the Hawks cannot reach a deal to their liking, sources say the team could opt to keep Kuminga or risk losing him outright rather than absorb unwanted salary for a modest return.
