Hawks Remain Open to Kuminga Deal as Cavaliers and Lakers Track His Market

The Atlanta Hawks have not ruled out a return for forward Jonathan Kuminga, even with 17 players already holding standard contracts, league sources told HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
Hawks
Atlanta is weighing a one-plus-one agreement with Kuminga while several roster questions remain unresolved. Guard Buddy Hield continues to surface in trade discussions, first-round pick Devin Carter’s role grew uncertain after the club acquired Ryan Nembhard, and forward Mouhamed Gueye is expected to miss at least part of next season following foot surgery. Any movement in those situations could create space for Kuminga.
Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers are monitoring Kuminga but are prioritizing LeBron James’ free-agency decision, according to Scotto. Until James chooses his next destination, Cleveland is hesitant to make major roster changes. If the Cavaliers need additional cap flexibility, forward Max Strus and guard Dennis Schroder are viewed as possible trade chips. The Charlotte Hornets have been linked to Schroder; Hornets president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson previously worked with the veteran guard in Atlanta.
Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers remain interested in Kuminga but may need to revise their offer. Scotto reported that a package built around rookies Dalton Knecht and Jaden Hardy could be more appealing than one featuring Jarred Vanderbilt, whose contract is guaranteed through the 2027-28 season. Knecht and Hardy carry smaller cap hits and no guaranteed money beyond 2026-27, assets that could facilitate a multi-team sign-and-trade.
As Kuminga’s market develops, Atlanta’s roster math—and decisions by James and other teams—will determine whether the former No. 7 overall pick lands in Georgia, Ohio or California.
