The Los Angeles Lakers have filled their vacancy at center by acquiring Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade, issuing the 24-year-old a four-year, $130 million contract.
General manager Rob Pelinka completed the deal by sending Utah the Lakers’ remaining unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 20233, along with pick swaps in 2028 and 2030. Kessler, viewed by the front office as a long-term rim protector alongside star guard Luka Doncic, addressed reporters at his introductory media session.
“Utah is a special place for me, I’ll always appreciate that,” Kessler said. “But being in this spot now, I’m very thankful. It’s a big change, and to be playing in high-stakes games, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Opportunity to compete
Since joining the Jazz in 2022, Kessler experienced multiple rebuilding seasons as the franchise accumulated draft assets. The move to Los Angeles pairs him with Doncic and guard Austin Reaves, forming a new pick-and-roll combination on a roster rebuilt around championship goals.
Kessler appeared in only five games last season but averaged 14.4 points, 10 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.8 blocks, production the Lakers believe can translate across an 82-game schedule with greater talent around him.
Complementing Luka Doncic
The 7-footer noted that he has yet to play with a primary playmaking guard of Doncic’s caliber. “I’m excited to work with an MVP-level player,” Kessler said, adding that their age proximity—both in their mid-to-late 20s—sets the stage for a long-term partnership.
Roster overhaul continues
Kessler is one of seven newcomers on a Lakers squad that also maintains interest in forwards Jonathan Kuminga and Matisse Thybulle. Following the trade that sent Anthony Davis out in exchange for Doncic, Kessler projects as the team’s top interior presence since Davis’s departure.
The Lakers open training camp next month with expectations of immediate contention and with Kessler positioned as the anchor of their new-look frontcourt.
