Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves admitted he is still coming to terms with the departure of LeBron James, his teammate for the first five seasons of his NBA career.
“I don’t know if I’ve honestly processed it yet,” Reaves told reporters during a recent media session. “Starting a season without him being on the team is gonna be different for me. That’s kind of all I’ve ever known is him being around, joking around acting like he’s 15.”
James has chosen to continue his career with another franchise next season, ending his tenure in Los Angeles. Reaves, who signed a new four-year contract with the Lakers this offseason, will open his sixth year in the league without the four-time MVP beside him in the locker room.
The 26-year-old guard said he remains appreciative of James’ influence on and off the court. “Any time I’ve talked about it, I’ve got nothing but love and respect for him,” Reaves added, joking that the two should “play some golf soon.”
With James gone, the Lakers are expected to build around Reaves and newly acquired superstar Luka Dončić. The organization also brought in Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton and Sandro Mamukelashvili during the summer as part of a roster overhaul.
Reaves is now the longest-tenured player on the team and has indicated a willingness to assume a larger leadership role. “I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help us win,” he said. “I’ll embrace that responsibility.”
