Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick wants newly acquired center Walker Kessler to maintain the three-point experiment he briefly unveiled last season before a shoulder injury cut his year short.
“He wants me to be able to do that,” Kessler said during a recent media session, noting that even the mere threat of a perimeter jumper can complicate opposing scouting reports. “Whether I can do that on pop, or catch on the pop, go second-side or be able to roll—both of those things are gonna be really important.”
Small Sample, Big Encouragement
Kessler, 23, attempted just eight three-pointers in five games last season, connecting on six. Although the sample was limited, the 75 percent success rate impressed Redick, a former NBA sharpshooter now in his first season guiding the Lakers.
Across his first three NBA campaigns, the 7-footer had never taken more than 34 threes in a single year. Known primarily as a rim finisher and paint defender, he owns a career field-goal percentage of 68.1, with most attempts coming at the rim.
Role Remains Inside, Range Adds Options
Redick still plans to deploy Kessler chiefly as a rim protector, rebounder and lob target, particularly in pick-and-roll actions with ball-handlers Luka Doncic or Austin Reaves. Even so, the coaching staff believes occasional pick-and-pops can stretch defenses and diversify the offense.
Shoulder Fully Recovered
Kessler’s 2024-25 season ended after he tore the labrum in his left shoulder. The center underwent surgery and reported that the joint “feels better than it ever has,” clearing him for full participation heading into training camp.
The Lakers open preseason next month, when Redick is expected to test Kessler’s range in live action.
