NBA executives are still waiting for clarity on LeBron James’ next move, but the four-time champion is said to be in direct contact with players on several clubs that hope to sign him in 2026 free agency, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.
Speaking on The Hoop Collective podcast with Tim MacMahon, Windhorst said league owners have been unable to obtain fresh information about James’ plans. “The people in the league are all talking to each other, trying to find out what LeBron is thinking,” he noted. “There’s not a whole lot of information.”
Windhorst added that numerous owners gathered last week at a media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, and compared notes. None reported any direct communication from the 20-time All-Star.
While front-office personnel remain in the dark, James has apparently reached out to players on clubs pursuing him. “LeBron is reaching out and talking to players on some of these teams, and they report back to their GM or coach, ‘Hey, LeBron called,’” Windhorst said.
Teams believed to be in contention
League sources who spoke with Hoops Wire consider the Cleveland Cavaliers the current favorite. The Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat are also viewed as strong candidates, with the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves mentioned less frequently.
Decision timeline
Many around the league expect James to announce his choice before the weekend. He is scheduled to appear at Fanatics Fest in New York on Thursday and Friday, a window that could coincide with a public decision — though, as past free-agency episodes have shown, nothing is guaranteed.
