Los Angeles Lakers center Walker Kessler said Tuesday he is eager to receive passes from Luka Doncic, describing the All-NBA guard as a unique playmaker he has never experienced in his career.
“He has such a big presence on the court. He makes every guy around him better,” Kessler told reporters at his introductory news conference. “I’ve never played with a point guard of that kind of size and stature. It’ll be a lot of fun.”
The 22-year-old big man added that his role will center on setting solid screens, defending the rim and easing Doncic’s workload on the defensive end. Kessler also said the right-shoulder issue that limited him to five games last season has fully healed. “It feels better than it’s ever felt in my life,” he noted. “It’s been cleared. Feels strong. Feels mobile.”
Bucks’ $64 million wager on Trent sparks debate
Gary Trent Jr.’s four-year, $64 million agreement with the Milwaukee Bucks continues to draw scrutiny. Sports Illustrated’s Tre Allen questioned whether Milwaukee overpaid after the guard averaged 8.1 points a game in 2023-24, comparing the pact to other sizeable Bucks contracts that failed to deliver.
The organization, however, is believed to view the deal as compensation for Trent accepting below-market salaries the previous two seasons and as a means to retain his Early Bird rights.
Cleveland writer advises against Love reunion
With speculation growing about a possible LeBron James return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, columnist Steve Kubitza of Sports Illustrated argued that the club should resist bringing back veteran forward Kevin Love. Kubitza contends Cleveland ought to prioritize younger depth around James instead of reuniting with the 38-year-old free agent, who helped the franchise capture the 2016 championship.
Any decision on Love likely hinges on whether James ultimately decides to re-sign with the Cavaliers.
