Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla acknowledged that moving on from the July trade sending Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia will take time, yet he emphasized that the arrival of three accomplished veterans offers an immediate path forward. The Celtics received forward Paul George in the deal and later reached free-agent agreements with center Mitchell Robinson and guard Mike Conley.
“We’re bringing in three players with very different backgrounds,” Mazzulla said earlier this week. He noted Robinson’s recent championship experience with New York, adding that George and Conley remain driven to capture their first title. “Those contrasting perspectives can help us on and off the floor,” the coach added.
Robinson’s Defensive Impact
Mazzulla is particularly intrigued by Robinson, who filled a key reserve role during the Knicks’ title run. The 7-foot center, he explained, provides defensive versatility and pick-and-roll coverage that should expand Boston’s tactical options. “Everyone will mention offensive rebounding, but it’s the combination of defense and recent winning that excites me,” Mazzulla said.
Tonje Pushes for Two-Way Contract
Summer League swingman John Tonje has emerged as a favorite for one of Boston’s two available two-way slots. Acquired from Utah in February, the 6-foot-5 guard posted 17 points and five rebounds in Sunday’s victory over Charlotte. “The contract is in the back of my mind, but my focus is on daily improvement,” Tonje said.
White Takes Coaching Role in Las Vegas
Veteran guard Derrick White, looking to rebound from a disappointing campaign, served as an extra voice on the bench during Sunday’s contest and has been an active participant in practices. “I wanted to attack the summer after not playing to my standards last year,” he said, identifying perimeter shooting and “little things” as focal points.
Mitchell Encouraged to Shoot
Second-round pick Dillon Mitchell attempted just one three-pointer last season at St. John’s, but the Celtics are urging the 6-foot-7 forward to expand his range. Mitchell went 2-for-5 from deep on Sunday while Charlotte defenders sagged off him. “The coaches keep telling me to shoot,” he said. “Their confidence helps me stay aggressive.”
Boston continues Summer League play this week before training camp opens in late September.
