Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson offered his clearest signal yet that the organization plans to pursue LeBron James when free agency opens.
During an interview on Amazon Prime’s NBA Summer League broadcast from Las Vegas on July 12, 2026, Atkinson smiled while assessing the team’s outlook and then referenced “a little free agency thing” that could provide a “real jump,” adding, “You know what I’m talking about. That’s exciting, too.”
Atkinson doubled down a short time later on SiriusXM NBA Radio, telling listeners, “We’re in the mix for the greatest player of all time. I know the state of Ohio, man, there’s something special there.”
Coaches rarely address players who are still under contract with another franchise, but Atkinson’s comments have intensified league-wide speculation that Cleveland tops the list of potential destinations for the four-time MVP. The Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves have also been linked to James.
The Cavaliers are coming off a postseason run that ended in the Eastern Conference semifinals and will enter the summer with salary-cap flexibility. James, 41, can become an unrestricted free agent if he declines his player option.
Atkinson’s remarks, delivered in front of national audiences, have further fueled anticipation that a reunion between James and his home-state franchise could be on the horizon.
