ESPN’s annual offseason questionnaire to coaches, scouts and executives shows no consensus on LeBron James’ whereabouts for the 2026-27 campaign. The 30-person panel produced six different answers, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers star as he enters his 23rd NBA season.
Survey results
Where will LeBron James be at the start of 2026-27?
• Los Angeles Lakers: 7 votes
• Retired: 5
• Cleveland Cavaliers: 4
• Golden State Warriors: 2
• Dallas Mavericks: 1
• Miami Heat: 1
James, 40, opted into the final season of his Lakers contract earlier this summer. While doing so, he indicated he would monitor the front office’s moves, fueling speculation that this could be his last year in purple and gold. The organization has meanwhile shifted marketing focus toward Luka Doncic, raising further questions about its long-term plans.
One Eastern Conference scout told ESPN, “If I was taking the Lakers or the field, I’d take the field. But I’ll take the Lakers over any specific team, especially given they are the one with a clear path to pay him.”
Retirement also remains a strong possibility. “It just feels like it’s where it’s going to end,” a Western Conference scout said.
Potential destinations
The Cleveland Cavaliers, James’ hometown club, garnered four votes, suggesting interest in a potential “storybook” finale. The Golden State Warriors, who reportedly contacted Los Angeles about a trade last season, received two votes. The Dallas Mavericks attracted one vote amid speculation James could reunite with former teammates Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving. Miami, where James won two championships, was also mentioned once.
Agent urges focus on present
While the league debates his future, agent Rich Paul has asked fans to appreciate what James is doing now rather than looking ahead. The forward begins his 23rd season this fall with career averages of 27.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists.
