San Antonio’s cornerstone is staying put on a deal that still leaves the franchise room to maneuver.
The Spurs and forward Victor Wembanyama agreed Friday to a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie extension, league sources told the New York Post. The contract is valued at 30 percent of the salary cap, the highest figure allowed for a player finishing his rookie scale deal.
While the agreement locks in the 7-foot-4 star through the 2030-31 season, it also includes a financial adjustment designed to help the Spurs retain flexibility under the cap, according to the report. Specific terms of that concession were not disclosed.
Wembanyama, 22, qualified for the so-called “super-max” rookie extension by meeting performance benchmarks during his first three NBA seasons. His new salary range will begin in 2027-28 and escalate annually.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft has averaged 23.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.6 blocks since entering the league, anchoring the Spurs’ rebuild and becoming one of the NBA’s top attractions.
The extension cannot be signed until the league’s designated July moratorium window opens, but both sides are expected to finalize paperwork as soon as rules allow.
