New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson said his first meeting with Kobe Bryant carried a surprise: the Los Angeles Lakers icon already knew his mother. The link dates back to the 1990s, when Bryant’s older sister, Sharia Bryant, and Brunson’s mother, Sandra Brunson, were volleyball teammates and roommates at Temple University.
The relationship resurfaced in public on June 30, 2026, when Sports Illustrated shared a photo of the two former Temple athletes. Brunson recalled that he initially could not understand why his mother greeted Bryant so comfortably until she explained the collegiate connection.
“They actually did know each other, and now I have that picture forever,” Brunson said.
Link to the Mamba Mentality
Brunson added that Bryant’s famed “Mamba Mentality” resonates with his own approach, especially during the Knicks’ 2026 postseason run that produced the franchise’s first championship in 53 years.
“I just do my best to stay present, make sure my mind is right, and trust my work,” Brunson explained. “Part of that philosophy seeps into the Mamba Mentality as well, so there’s a connectivity there.”
Brunson’s clutch performances throughout the playoffs—highlighted by late-game shots and multiple comebacks—drew frequent comparisons to Bryant. The guard acknowledged the parallels but emphasized that his work habits stem from both his parents’ guidance and lessons drawn from the five-time NBA champion.
The unexpected family bond offers another layer to Brunson’s admiration for Bryant, whose influence continues to shape the Knicks star’s preparation and mindset.
