ESPN NBA reporter Brian Windhorst has backed away from a recent on-air remark about LeBron James’ long-term plans, admitting the comment was driven by “just vibes” rather than hard reporting.
During a July 7 appearance, Windhorst acknowledged that his earlier suggestion about where the Los Angeles Lakers star might play after his current contract ends should not be taken as sourced information. “I probably shouldn’t have put it out there like that,” he said, clarifying that the speculation was “just vibes” and not based on conversations with James or his representatives.
Windhorst had previously implied that James, 41, could consider a move once he becomes a free agent, a comment that quickly circulated among NBA fans. On Sunday he conceded that the remark was more intuition than insight, emphasizing that “nobody really knows” what the four-time champion will decide.
James has one year remaining on his deal with the Lakers and holds a player option for the 2027-28 season. The league’s all-time scoring leader has not publicly discussed any plans beyond honoring his current contract.
Windhorst’s reversal leaves James’ future as uncertain as ever, with the NBA community still waiting for concrete indications from the 22-year veteran himself.
