NBA Opens 2026–27 League Year as July Moratorium Ends

The NBA’s annual freeze on official transactions is over. At 11:01 a.m. Central Time today, the 2026 July moratorium concluded, allowing franchises to formally complete trades and free-agent contracts that had been limited to verbal agreements since the league year began.

During the week-long moratorium, teams were permitted to negotiate deals, sign first- and second-round draft picks, execute two-way contracts and finalize minimum-salary agreements. Major transactions involving Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, Jaylen Brown and LaMelo Ball, however, remain pending until the paperwork can be processed.

Clubs are not required to close every agreement immediately. Complex salary-cap strategies and multi-team trades often force front offices to stagger moves. The Los Angeles Lakers, for example, intend to complete Austin Reaves’ four-year maximum contract only after exhausting their remaining cap space; his cap charge will jump from roughly $20.9 million to $41.24 million once the deal is signed.

With the freeze lifted, transaction logs will be updated as signings and trades become official. To avoid flooding feeds with previously reported moves, the league-focused outlet tracking these developments will consolidate confirmations into a single running article, issuing separate updates only when terms materially change.
