The Los Angeles Lakers’ push to become younger and more athletic led to four new signings this summer, including 26-year-old guard Quentin Grimes. While appearing on the podcast “The Young Man and the Three,” Grimes recounted a recent training session with newly hired head coach JJ Redick that took place in the Hamptons.
“I DM’d him and said I wanted to get some work in,” Grimes said. “He answered right away, told me to come out, and even let me stay in his guest house.” The pair spent two days on shooting drills and footwork, with Redick quickly spotting a lingering knee issue by watching Grimes come off pin-down screens.
Grimes, a 36.6% career three-point shooter, called Redick “a wizard of the game” and later joined him for additional workouts in Brooklyn before the guard’s third NBA season. Redick’s reputation for designing sets that free up shooters—evident last season with Luke Kennard—has the Lakers hoping Grimes can edge closer to 40% from long range while playing alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
The coach and player are expected to spend most of the remaining offseason together as Grimes prepares for his first year in Los Angeles. Whether he starts remains undecided, but the Lakers view his scoring as a key roster need.
After his signing was reported, Grimes posted a childhood photo of himself in purple and gold gear, underscoring a lifelong connection to the franchise.
