The Cleveland Cavaliers are exploring whether acquiring Bronny James could help bring his father, LeBron James, back to the franchise, the New York Post reported on July 5, 2026.
According to the report, Cleveland’s front office has discussed trading up in the 2026 NBA Draft to secure Bronny’s rights. League rules allow teams to negotiate trades for draft slots, and the Cavaliers are said to be canvassing potential partners willing to move their picks.
The strategy hinges on LeBron’s well-documented desire to play alongside his eldest son before retiring. The four-time NBA champion can become a free agent next summer, giving Cleveland an opening to reunite with the player who led the franchise to its only title in 2016.
No formal trade offers have been confirmed, and representatives for the Cavaliers declined comment to the Post. Bronny, a 6-foot-4 guard who most recently played at USC, remains eligible for the 2026 draft and has not announced whether he will stay in the draft pool.
LeBron, 41, spent 11 seasons in two stints with Cleveland, earning four league MVP awards and making eight NBA Finals appearances with the team. He currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.
NBA teams cannot negotiate directly with active players on other rosters, but Cleveland’s maneuvering for Bronny would signal its interest in reuniting with the league’s career scoring leader.
