NEW YORK — New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson said the injury that forced him out of the team’s most recent playoff appearance was not the result of on-court contact but rather a physical reaction to a sudden family incident.

Robinson disclosed the information during an interview published Wednesday by ESPN. He did not provide details about the family matter or specify the exact nature of the reaction, but he confirmed that the episode led directly to the ailment that kept him from playing.

The 26-year-old big man missed the decisive postseason game after being listed with what the club described at the time as a lower-body injury. Robinson, who averaged 5.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in 66 regular-season games, emphasized that the issue was unrelated to basketball activity.

The Knicks have not commented on Robinson’s explanation, and no timetable for his full return was immediately available.
