The expectation around the NBA is shifting toward LeBron James returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers, league insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer reported on Saturday in The Stein Line. While no final decision has been made, multiple executives told the outlet that Cleveland now appears to be the frontrunner for the four-time NBA champion’s next destination.

The Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat have been considered the primary contenders since free agency opened. Recent silence from Cleveland’s front office has fueled speculation that the club is preserving roster flexibility in case additional moves—such as creating space for rookie guard Bronny James—become necessary. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin previously noted that the Los Angeles Lakers could explore trading Bronny if James opts to play elsewhere.

Rich Paul, James’s longtime agent, acknowledged on the Game Over podcast with Max Kellerman that Cleveland remains under “serious consideration,” citing the Cavs’ current roster, their championship window and James’s longstanding ties to the organization. Paul also listed the Warriors, Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers as teams still in the running, emphasizing that James is prioritizing the right basketball situation over the largest contract.

According to Stein and Fischer, Minnesota continues to press hard for the 20-time All-Star, while Philadelphia and Denver believe they remain viable options. Nonetheless, momentum within league circles appears to favor a third stint for James in Northeast Ohio.

History suggests that momentum does not always dictate James’s final choice, leaving teams across the league waiting for his official decision.
