The Minnesota Timberwolves agreed Friday to a one-year contract with veteran forward Trey Lyles, a move that brings their roster to 12 guaranteed deals.

Second-round pick Isaiah Evans is expected to claim another slot, leaving the club with one or two vacancies as free agency continues.

According to The Athletic reporter Jon Krawczynski, team executives are deliberately preserving that flexibility because they believe they are a realistic destination for free-agent forward LeBron James. Minnesota has reportedly “intensified” its recruitment of the four-time NBA champion.

The Timberwolves see an immediate opening at power forward after trading Julius Randle and Naz Reid earlier in the offseason. Club officials also view their core of Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert as a group that could ease James’s nightly workload and keep the focus on another championship run.

Krawczynski added that team management has highlighted the chance for James to secure the franchise’s first NBA title, a feat they believe would further enhance his legacy.

Financially, Minnesota is near the league’s second apron, making a veteran minimum contract the most practical path unless further salary is cleared. Multiple reports indicate that James’s priorities center more on roster fit than salary size.

Optimism in Minneapolis grew after agent Rich Paul named the Timberwolves among a select tier of suitable landing spots during his “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman, praising the club’s roster makeup and front-office leadership under Tim Connelly.

Minnesota’s pursuit remains uncertain, but by saving one or two roster slots after adding Lyles, the team is positioned to act quickly should James decide to relocate.
