Lakers reportedly weigh trading Bronny James after LeBron’s free-agency decision

The Los Angeles Lakers may shop rookie guard Bronny James once LeBron James determines where he will play next season, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported.

According to McMenamin, the organization is open to a move that would allow the father-and-son duo to stay together if LeBron signs elsewhere in free agency. LeBron has already informed Los Angeles he will not return for a ninth season with the club.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat are viewed as the leading contenders for the 39-year-old star, McMenamin noted. Should LeBron join one of those teams, the Lakers could look to trade Bronny to the same destination.

Los Angeles fully guaranteed Bronny’s $2.3 million salary for 2024-25, signaling the franchise still sees value in the 19-year-old second-round pick as a developmental piece. However, maintaining the James family partnership remains a priority, sources told McMenamin.

No final decisions have been made regarding Bronny’s future, and he could still begin next season with the Lakers if no suitable trade emerges.
