California Taxes Expected to Strip Millions From Walker Kessler’s $130 Million Lakers Contract

Los Angeles — California’s high income-tax rates are poised to take a substantial chunk out of Walker Kessler’s new $130 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a July 2, 2026 report.

The New York Post noted that the state’s top bracket, combined with federal obligations and other mandatory deductions, will sharply reduce the amount the 24-year-old player ultimately pockets from the headline figure.

The Lakers and Kessler agreed to the nine-figure contract earlier this week. While the total value remains $130 million on paper, the report underscored how signing in California can significantly lower an athlete’s take-home pay compared with states that have no income tax.

The franchise has not publicly commented on the tax implications of the agreement.
