Free agent guard Quentin Grimes has agreed to a four-year, $60 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers that includes a player option, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania on July 1, 2026.

Immediate Impact for Cap-Rich Lakers

Los Angeles entered free agency with the league’s largest salary-cap space amid expectations that LeBron James will leave the franchise. Securing the 26-year-old Grimes was viewed internally as an early priority as the club reshapes its backcourt around Luka Dončić.

Career Path and Recent Production

Selected 25th overall by the New York Knicks out of Houston in the 2021 draft, Grimes has also played for the Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers. He forged a strong connection with Dončić during their stint together in Dallas and now reunites with the All-NBA guard in Los Angeles.

Last season with Philadelphia, Grimes appeared in 75 games—starting 19—and averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists across 29.4 minutes. He shot 45 percent from the field and 33.4 percent from three on 5.1 attempts per game, slightly below his career 36.6 percent mark from beyond the arc.

Ongoing Roster Moves

The Lakers have been active since acquiring center Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz. In addition to Grimes, the team has reached agreements with Sandro Mamukelashvili and Collin Sexton, while Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard have departed and Rui Hachimura is expected to follow.

Grimes projects as either a starting 3-and-D option alongside Dončić or the first guard off the bench as Los Angeles continues overhauling its roster for the 2026-27 campaign.
