The Boston Celtics have reached an agreement with free-agent center Mitchell Robinson on a three-year, $47.4 million contract that includes a player option for the final season, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

The deal is expected to be finalized with the club’s full non-taxpayer mid-level exception, a move that will hard-cap Boston at the NBA’s first tax apron, according to salary-cap analyst Yossi Gozlan.

Robinson, 28, averaged 5.7 points and 8.8 rebounds in 60 regular-season games while anchoring the paint off the bench for the New York Knicks, who captured last season’s NBA championship. His rebounding and rim protection remained pivotal throughout the postseason.

League sources said New York could have matched Boston’s offer, but doing so would have pushed the Knicks into the league’s restrictive second tax apron. SNY’s Ian Begley noted that the organization still holds “a ton of appreciation and respect” for Robinson and views his departure as a financial casualty rather than a basketball decision.

By adding the 7-foot center, Boston strengthens its frontcourt defense and hands one of its chief Eastern Conference rivals a significant offseason loss.
