LOS ANGELES — Center Deandre Ayton will remain with the Los Angeles Lakers next season after exercising his $8.1 million player option for 2026-27, league sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Monday, June 29.
The 27-year-old signed a two-year, $16.2 million contract with the Lakers last summer following a buyout from the Portland Trail Blazers. The deal included the option for a second season, giving Ayton until the eve of free agency to decide on his future.
Ayton averaged 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting 67.1% from the field during the 2025-26 regular season. He started all 72 games he played and appeared in the Lakers’ 10 postseason contests.
Keeping Ayton on an expiring $8.1 million contract gives Los Angeles flexibility. The club can retain him as the starting center, move him into a reserve role, or explore trade options as it continues searching for a long-term frontcourt partner for Luka Doncic.
With free agency opening Tuesday, June 30, the Lakers are expected to evaluate other frontcourt options. League sources indicate interest in unrestricted free-agent big men Jock Landale and Dean Wade, both considered mid-tier targets.
Ayton’s decision finalizes one roster spot as Los Angeles prepares for an offseason that will shape its 2026-27 campaign.
