Houston — Rockets guard Fred VanVleet revealed new details about the torn right ACL and meniscus that sidelined him for the entire season. Speaking on the latest episode of his “Unguarded” podcast, VanVleet said the injury occurred during a team retreat in the Bahamas last September while he was demonstrating offensive sets. He initially believed the setback would cost only “two, three weeks,” but a swollen knee and subsequent MRI confirmed the full extent of the damage. VanVleet described spending three days disputing the diagnosis before accepting it and added that he intends to return this season “with a chip on my shoulder,” noting he feels he has “another 10” years to play.

Thornton impresses Houston front office
Before moving up to No. 31 in Wednesday’s draft, the Rockets received strong endorsements for Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton from nearly every source they contacted. Team officials placed Thornton higher than 31st on their board, citing his diverse scoring skills. As a senior, Thornton ranked in the 98th percentile in effective field-goal percentage and the 93rd percentile in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Boozer focused on winning in Memphis
Third overall pick Cameron Boozer told Grind City Media he intends to instill a winning mindset with the Grizzlies. “You play the game to win. That’s what I’ve done at every level,” Boozer said, adding that he hopes to transfer that approach to Memphis.

Pelicans evaluate options at center
New Orleans is expected to decline its $8 million team option on Kevon Looney and is surveying the market for another center. League sources indicate Robert Williams, Jusuf Nurkic and Mitchell Robinson are among the players under consideration.
