LaMelo Ball learned only recently that his offseason plans would shift from Charlotte to Minneapolis, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported Wednesday. The guard, who had anticipated staying with the Hornets, is now headed to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a major trade finalized this week.
Minnesota’s offer—center Naz Reid, a 2033 first-round pick, three future pick swaps and three second-round selections—convinced Charlotte to make a deal after fielding proposals from around the league, according to multiple reports. The Hornets had not actively placed Ball on the market.
Despite the unexpected move, Ball is said to be enthusiastic about his new destination. “My understanding is LaMelo Ball is very excited to go play with Anthony Edwards to try to win championships,” ESPN’s Shams Charania told The Pat McAfee Show. Charania noted that Ball and Edwards are friends and have spoken recently about joining forces.
Ball heads to Minnesota after one of the healthiest and most productive years of his career, helping Charlotte reach 44 wins and earn a spot in the Play-In Tournament. His arrival gives the Timberwolves another All-Star–caliber playmaker as the franchise prepares for another run at the NBA title.
