The first time Luka Doncic sensed he truly belonged to the Los Angeles Lakers came on the night of his debut at Crypto.com Arena, the All-NBA guard told the Wall Street Journal.
“It was probably my first game, when I started,” Doncic recalled. “The way they welcomed me, all the shirts in the chairs—that was the moment I felt like a Laker.”
Los Angeles acquired the 26-year-old from the Dallas Mavericks last season, a move that immediately raised questions about his willingness to commit beyond his current contract, which expires in two years. The trade uprooted the Slovenian star mid-season while he was rehabbing a calf strain sustained on Christmas Day.
His first home appearance erased much of that uncertainty. Packed stands, custom T-shirts draped over every seat and a loud reception convinced Doncic he had found a new NBA home. The guard delivered several highlight-reel moments over 28 games to close the 2024-25 campaign, setting the stage for his first full season in purple and gold.
General manager Rob Pelinka has continued to back his new franchise cornerstone. The Lakers allowed Doncic to represent Slovenia in FIBA EuroBasket during the offseason and even sent team officials to Poland to watch him play, signaling their commitment to supporting the four-time All-Star on and off the court.
