LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers will place lead player development coach Ty Abbott in charge of their 2026 Summer League squad, according to Dan Woike of The Athletic.

Abbott, hired by the Lakers in August 2024, will guide the team through the California Classic Summer League in Sacramento from July 3-6 and the Las Vegas Summer League later that month. Potential assistants on his bench include Bob Beyer, Greg St. Jean, Lindsey Harding and Beau Levesque.

Coaching résumé

The 36-year-old coach spent four seasons with the Chicago Bulls, advancing from player development coordinator to player development coach. Before Chicago, he served as a player development associate with the Philadelphia 76ers after beginning his coaching path with their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. Abbott’s overlap with current Lakers head coach JJ Redick in Philadelphia is believed to have paved the way for his Los Angeles appointment.

Expected roster

The Lakers will release their full Summer League roster in early July. Second-year forward Adou Thiero, a former second-round pick who missed last year’s competition while recovering from left knee surgery, has indicated he will participate. Two-way players Drew Timme and Chris Mañon are also candidates, along with the player selected 25th overall in the 2026 NBA Draft if the club retains the pick.

The California Classic will precede the Las Vegas showcase, where prospects and young veterans compete for roster spots and development opportunities under Abbott’s direction.
