Guard CJ McCollum has agreed to a one-year, $21 million contract extension with the Atlanta Hawks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The new deal, which includes a trade kicker, will keep the 34-year-old under contract through the 2026-27 season, agent Sam Goldfeder told Charania.

Background of the agreement

Reporting from Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal in January indicated both sides were aiming for a one-year extension worth about $20 million shortly after McCollum was acquired from Washington. The veteran joined Atlanta on Jan. — along with Corey Kispert — in the trade that sent four-time All-Star Trae Young to the Wizards. Young recently declined his $49 million player option and is expected to re-sign with Washington in free agency.

Production last season

In 76 combined games with the Wizards and Hawks, McCollum averaged 18.7 points, 4.1 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.0 steal over 29.8 minutes per contest, shooting .456 from the field, .357 from three-point range and .748 at the foul line. It marked the first time in a decade that his scoring average fell below 20 points per game.

Contract history

ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted that McCollum, who turns 35 before next season, has reached an extension rather than testing free agency on all four previous occasions he was eligible. He is among several veteran players around the league eligible to sign new deals before the June 30 deadline.

The Hawks have not yet announced when the extension will be formally signed.
