Top Los Angeles Lakers decision-makers crossed the Atlantic this month to watch Luka Doncic carry Slovenia at EuroBasket, underscoring the organization’s commitment to its stars. Team governor Jeanie Buss and president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka attended games in Poland alongside advisors Kurt and Linda Rambis, several staffers, and assistant coach Greg St. Jean, who worked on Slovenia’s bench.

“Luka is deeply proud of playing for his country,” Pelinka said. “Our partnerships with players include supporting the things they’re passionate about, and for Luka that was an easy decision.”

Doncic’s standout tournament

Slovenia left without a medal, yet Doncic posted eye-catching numbers: 34.7 points per game — the highest EuroBasket average since 1989 — and 40.5 points in two knockout contests. Lakers coaches on site noted a higher vertical leap, quicker splits of double-teams and greater defensive disruption after his offseason conditioning program.

Pelinka welcomed the benefits of competitive summer basketball. “Sometimes offseason work here focuses on individual drills,” he said. “A team environment can get lost, so I support players competing.”

Cap flexibility remains priority, with room for exceptions

While multiple reports have suggested the Lakers are saving salary-cap space for the summer of 2027, Pelinka told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin the club will stay flexible if the right deal arises sooner. Decisions loom with expiring contracts for Rui Hachimura ($18.3 million), Gabe Vincent ($11.5 million) and Maxi Kleber ($11 million), while Austin Reaves is on track for free agency after turning down a four-year, $89 million extension in June. According to team sources, Los Angeles would consider absorbing a contract that runs beyond 2026.

“Optionality isn’t just about the future,” Pelinka said. “It’s also about the present.”

LeBron reflects on 50,000-point milestone

During a visit to China this week, LeBron James discussed becoming the first player to eclipse 50,000 combined regular-season and playoff points. “It’s a microcosm of my career,” he told CBV Game. “All the hours I’ve invested in my craft show that hard work pays off.”

Thiero honors Derrick Rose with jersey No. 1

Rookie forward Adou Thiero said on NBA on Prime that he will wear No. 1 to honor his childhood favorite Derrick Rose. Thiero had hoped to keep his college number 3 but opted for the number he first wore on the court when it was unavailable.
