The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to make retaining forwards Rui Hachimura and Jaxson Hayes their top priority when free agency opens this summer, according to Dan Woike of The Athletic.
Los Angeles enters the offseason determined to strengthen the roster around star guard Luka Doncic after another deep playoff run. While marquee names such as Austin Reaves and LeBron James headline the team’s list of potential free agents, sources told Woike that Hachimura and Hayes are viewed internally as the most essential pieces to keep.
Key Contributors Last Season
Hachimura, 26, delivered a breakout postseason, averaging 17.5 points per game and shooting an eye-catching 56.9 percent from three-point range. His improved defense and rebounding further solidified his role as a core contributor.
Hayes, 24, offered consistent energy off the bench and developed strong pick-and-roll chemistry with Doncic. The 6-11 forward even secured a Slovenian passport to play alongside the Dallas superstar on the national team, underscoring their connection on and off the court.
Other Contract Decisions Loom
Beyond Hachimura and Hayes, the Lakers face decisions on several rotation players. Luke Kennard is set to hit the open market, while veterans Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton hold player options they could choose to decline. Team officials are expected to remain in contact with those players, though Hachimura and Hayes are considered the least expendable if cap constraints force difficult choices.
Johnson Calls for Youth and Athleticism
Franchise legend Magic Johnson recently emphasized the need for Los Angeles to get “younger and more athletic” to keep pace with rising contenders such as the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. Locking in Hachimura and Hayes would align with that vision while preserving continuity around Doncic.
The Lakers can begin negotiating with free agents once the NBA’s moratorium period expires in early July.
