NEW YORK — Victor Wembanyama believes San Antonio’s collapse in the NBA Finals provided a harsh but necessary education for one of the league’s youngest rosters.

The Spurs held double-digit advantages in every game of the best-of-seven series yet lost four straight after taking Game 1, falling to the New York Knicks 4-1. In the decisive Game 5, San Antonio led by as many as 16 points before Jalen Brunson poured in 45 to seal a 94-90 Knicks win and the championship.

“The margin for error is very thin,” Wembanyama told reporters via ESPN. “We absolutely dominated for most of the series, but our mistakes are punished so hard that we can’t have ups and downs like this.”

The 22-year-old center called the setback “the biggest lesson of my life” and said the experience should accelerate the growth of a team that reached the Finals sooner than most observers predicted.

While Wembanyama declined to detail the specifics of that lesson, he made clear the memory will linger as San Antonio prepares for next season.
