NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas believes anyone who keeps LeBron James out of the league’s all-time top five is driven by “jealousy” and “envy.”

Appearing on “Run It Back” on FanDuel TV, the two-time NBA champion addressed commentators who downplay the Los Angeles Lakers star’s legacy. “Jealousy. Envy,” Thomas said when asked why some analysts refuse to rank James among the greatest ever. He added that those critics “intentionally ignore the obvious” despite James holding “every basketball record on the books.”

Thomas’ comments stand out because many former players from the Michael Jordan era are often slow to praise James. The 39-year-old forward is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and ranks in the top five in numerous statistical categories, yet some pundits still question his historical standing. Thomas dismissed those arguments as “straight-up B.S.”

James Still Weighing Retirement

While debate over his legacy continues, James has yet to decide whether he will return for a 22nd NBA season. In a recent Time Magazine cover story celebrating the 100 most influential people in sports, he said his decision will be guided by mentality rather than physical health. “As long as my mind is willing to put in the work, my body will follow,” James told the magazine, noting that he will retire once he feels himself “cutting corners.”

The four-time MVP averaged 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists in the 2023-24 regular season before the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets.

No timetable has been announced for James’ decision, but Thomas’ remarks add another layer to the conversation surrounding the league’s most decorated active player.
