The New York Knicks ended a 53-year title drought Saturday night, closing out the NBA Finals with a 94-90 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 at Frost Bank Center.
Guard Jalen Brunson delivered 45 points in the clincher and was voted Finals Most Valuable Player. Fighting back tears during a post-game interview on ABC, Brunson called the moment “everything I ever dreamed of” and said winning a championship was “the reason I came to New York.”
A sizable group of traveling Knicks supporters filled the arena, providing loud backing as the franchise secured its first crown since 1973.
Head coach Mike Brown used the trophy presentation to thank owner James Dolan, team president Leon Rose and the fan base. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, the club intends to fly back to New York City later tonight to continue the celebration.
