The San Antonio Spurs return home for Game 5 of the NBA Finals facing elimination, yet players insist belief is still strong after Sunday’s narrow loss dropped them into a 3-1 hole against the New York Knicks.
“Everybody thinks—everybody knows—we’re going to do it,” rookie star Victor Wembanyama told reporters. “We need to isolate that one game and take it one game at a time. It would be a mistake to waste our energy on multiple games.”
San Antonio has stayed within striking distance in each contest, with all three defeats decided in the closing minutes. That competitiveness, Wembanyama said, fuels the group’s optimism despite the daunting series score.
The 20-year-old acknowledged the demanding nature of the championship round—longer minutes, greater intensity and constant scrutiny—but dismissed fatigue as an excuse. A two-day gap before Thursday’s Game 5 is expected to give both clubs time to recharge.
Veteran guard De’Aaron Fox echoed the rookie’s stance. “We’ve seen teams come back from 3-1,” Fox noted. “In those series, the games they lost were often by double digits. The games we’re losing have all been close. We still believe we have a chance to win.”
Historically, franchises trailing 3-1 in the Finals rarely rally to claim the title, yet the Spurs insist they are focused only on extending the matchup and forcing a Game 6 in New York.
