The Los Angeles Lakers do not share the widespread concern that pairing Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in the backcourt creates an insurmountable defensive weakness, according to an internal assessment reported by The Athletic.
A team source told the outlet that any defensive shortcomings can be mitigated “provided the Lakers address other needs on the wing and at the rim.”
High-Powered Duo Led NBA in Scoring
Doncic and Reaves formed the league’s highest-scoring tandem during the 2024-25 season, consistently exploiting mismatches and displaying strong on-court chemistry. Their offensive output propelled Los Angeles through much of the regular season while the club maintained a respectable defensive ranking overall.
Effort and IQ Cited on Defense
Reaves has long been known for drawing charges and playing with high energy, while Doncic showed noticeable improvement defensively this year, countering the perception that he is a liability. Team officials believe both guards function effectively within a disciplined scheme when surrounded by capable stoppers.
Supplementary Pieces Remain a Priority
Los Angeles found success after inserting Marcus Smart into the starting lineup as a primary perimeter defender. The front office is expected to seek additional wing defenders and a dedicated rim protector to complement the Doncic-Reaves pairing.
Free-Agency Watch on Reaves
Reaves will enter unrestricted free agency this summer and is expected to draw interest from multiple clubs, including at least two Eastern Conference playoff teams, according to the report. Retaining the 26-year-old guard is considered a top offseason objective for the Lakers.
The franchise believes that with the right defensive specialists alongside them, Doncic and Reaves can anchor a lineup that excels on both ends of the floor.
