NEW YORK — Victor Wembanyama heard Madison Square Garden’s sold-out crowd direct repeated “f–k you” chants at him during Game 3 on Sunday night and later said the outburst simply confirms his spot on the Knicks’ running list of visiting villains.
“I get it,” the rookie center told reporters after the game. “New York fans always pick someone. Now I know where I stand.”
The jeers erupted midway through the first quarter and resurfaced several times as the San Antonio Spurs squared off with the Knicks in their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup. Security did not intervene, and arena officials said the language did not violate any Garden policy beyond routine crowd warnings.
Asked whether the chants rattled him, Wembanyama shook his head. “You have to embrace the atmosphere,” he said. “If the building is that loud, you’re doing something right.”
Knicks forward Julius Randle, speaking separately at the post-game podium, called the chants “typical Garden energy” and said he expects the same intensity in Wednesday’s Game 4.
Game 3 ended with the Spurs edging the Knicks, 112-109, giving San Antonio a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Wembanyama finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks.
Tip-off for Game 4 at Madison Square Garden is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on June 11.
