The Cleveland Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2025-26 season, but ESPN’s Zach Kram believes their defense remains an obstacle to championship contention.
In a review of his preseason projections, Kram recalled predicting Cleveland would finish with a below-average defense. The Cavaliers ultimately ranked 15th in defensive rating—just above league average—but Kram argued the slight over-performance still represented a clear drop from the unit’s earlier standards.
During forward Evan Mobley’s first four years, Cleveland consistently ranked among the NBA’s top defensive clubs. This season’s decline, according to Kram, underscores a pressing offseason question: how to build an elite defense around a backcourt led by Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.
The Cavaliers posted a losing playoff record despite their conference-finals appearance and struggled to contain opponents throughout the postseason. With free agency and potential roster moves ahead, Kram wrote that shoring up the defensive end is likely to be one of the organization’s highest priorities.
Team executives have repeatedly voiced confidence in the current core and have indicated they have “zero intention” of trading Mitchell. Even so, Kram contends that improving defensive efficiency will be critical if Cleveland hopes to advance beyond this year’s finish.
