Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic acknowledged this week that he might never find complete closure after being traded from the Dallas Mavericks, the franchise where he expected to spend his entire career.
“I think it will always be strange,” Doncic told The Wall Street Journal. “I don’t know if someday I will have closure or not. For sure, it will always be weird.”
The deal that sent Doncic to Los Angeles stunned both the 26-year-old star and the Dallas fan base. Dallas officials later pointed to concerns about his conditioning and work ethic as primary reasons for the move. Those explanations have not eased the tension between the two sides.
Doncic’s first game back in Dallas as a Laker on Apr. 9, 2025, underscored the emotional weight of the trade. He shed tears during a pre-game tribute video at American Airlines Center, then poured in a season-high 45 points to lead the Lakers to victory.
Since arriving in Los Angeles, the four-time All-NBA guard has signed a maximum contract extension and been warmly received by Lakers fans and teammates. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver publicly praised Doncic for addressing the trade candidly and maintaining professionalism throughout the transition.
Whether he ultimately reconciles with the Mavericks organization remains uncertain, but Doncic continues to focus on his new role as one of the pillars of the Lakers’ championship aspirations.
