MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Timberwolves face a pivotal offseason amid reports that All-Star guard Anthony Edwards expects the roster to get stronger before training camp, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said during the network’s NBA Finals coverage.
Windhorst noted that Edwards, regarded as the franchise’s cornerstone, is monitoring Minnesota’s plans closely and may also be eyeing the postseason success of former teammate Karl-Anthony Towns, now two wins from a championship with the New York Knicks.
“Going forward after this series, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ future is in question somewhat because of what Ant feels about the roster,” Windhorst said on the broadcast.
The Timberwolves advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2025 but were eliminated in the second round this year by the San Antonio Spurs. Their playoff run was hampered by injuries, including guard Donte DiVincenzo’s ruptured Achilles that kept him out of the postseason.
Minnesota still fields a high-profile core of Edwards, Julius Randle, Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid, yet keeping — and upgrading — that group will be costly. The club already projects to sit near the league’s second luxury-tax apron, limiting flexibility for major additions.
Head coach Chris Finch recently signaled the front office’s intent to stay active. “I do expect us to be active,” Finch told reporters. “We love our core, and we know we need to keep adding to it a little bit.”
President of basketball operations Tim Connelly has a reputation for bold moves; Minnesota acquired guard Ayo Dosunmu at midseason. Whether another significant deal materializes remains uncertain, but Windhorst’s comments suggest Edwards wants the organization to keep pressing forward.
