PORTLAND, Ore. — Point guard Damian Lillard, whose time with the Milwaukee Bucks lasted just two seasons, said he “couldn’t be happier” to be back with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Speaking on “The Sideline with Andy Katz,” the seven-time All-Star explained that returning to the franchise where he spent the first 11 years of his career has brought a renewed sense of comfort.

“In my adulthood, coming back here at this time, with the age of my kids, where the team is — they’ve developed and grown over the last couple years — this is one of the times where I feel extremely happy,” Lillard said. “Every day I wake up and I’m thankful. I’m waking up seeing my kids, taking them to school. I can just drive down to my mom’s house.”

Trade request, short Bucks stint

Lillard requested a trade from Portland two summers ago, listing the Miami Heat as his preferred destination. General manager Joe Cronin ultimately sent him to Milwaukee after months of stalled talks with Miami.

The anticipated pairing of Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo never fully materialized. Injuries to both stars contributed to consecutive first-round playoff exits. Last March, Lillard was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf, and while he returned for the postseason, he tore his Achilles tendon and will miss the upcoming campaign.

Contract move and rehabilitation

The Bucks responded by stretching the final two years of Lillard’s contract, creating cap space that allowed the club to sign center Myles Turner. Lillard, meanwhile, rejoined the Trail Blazers and has begun his rehabilitation.

“I recently started back running, and I’m four months out,” he said. “I’m feeling strong. I’m going to take my time to get all the way back so that when I return to the floor I’m not a shell of myself. I plan to return and be myself.”

For now, the 33-year-old is focused on recovery and enjoying familiar surroundings in Portland.
