Indiana Fever pull reporter’s credential after story on Caitlin Clark’s injury plan, writer says

Veteran Indiana basketball journalist Scott Agness says the Indiana Fever have revoked his media credential, citing what the team called “inaccurate and unsubstantiated information” related to a report on rookie star Caitlin Clark.

Agness, who publishes the Fieldhouse Files newsletter and has covered the Pacers and Fever for years, disclosed the move in a post on Tuesday. According to the reporter, Fever officials informed him that his access was being rescinded after he wrote about Clark’s late scratch from the May 20 game against the Portland Fire.

In that May 20 article, Agness reported that Clark’s absence was part of a planned workload management strategy and not the result of any new injury. He later updated the piece with comments from head coach Stephanie White, who said Clark was healthy but that the team was exercising caution over a back issue.

Agness stated he stands by the story, adding that the information came from a “trusted league source.” He said his credential issue highlights ongoing tension with Pacers Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of both the NBA’s Pacers and the WNBA’s Fever. According to Agness, his access to Pacers events was limited at the start of 2024 and has yet to be restored.

The decision drew swift reaction from colleagues across the league. The Professional Basketball Writers Association’s WNBA chapter released a statement condemning the revocation, saying, “The PBWA objects in the strongest possible terms to any reporter losing access for the act of reporting.”

Despite the setback, Agness wrote that he intends to continue covering both franchises. “This is my livelihood,” he said, pledging to report on professional basketball in Indiana with his usual standards.
