Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic said he hopes to join the ranks of professional franchise owners after his playing career, echoing a path pursued by teammate LeBron James.
Speaking with Jason Gay of The Wall Street Journal, Doncic called sports ownership “something I’m very, very interested in,” noting that his ambitions extend beyond basketball. The 26-year-old cited James’s business portfolio and conditioning regimen as motivation to explore opportunities off the court.
Contract Extension and Offseason Work
Doncic addressed reporters on Aug. 2, 2025, at the UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo after signing a three-year, $165 million contract extension with Los Angeles. The early playoff exit last spring allowed the All-Star extra time to focus on diet and conditioning, which was evident during his summer run with Slovenia at EuroBasket 2025. He led the underdog squad to the quarterfinals before falling to gold-medalist Germany.
Guidance From Established Owners
James currently holds stakes in the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Penguins and Liverpool F.C. through Fenway Sports Group and has openly discussed a desire to own an NBA team. In addition, new Lakers majority owner Mark Walter, who helped guide the Los Angeles Dodgers to sustained success, offers another example for Doncic to study.
Focus on 2025-26 Season
Training camp opens in the coming weeks, and team officials believe Doncic’s improved fitness could spark a fast start to the 2025-26 campaign. While long-term business ventures remain on his radar, the four-time All-NBA selection said his immediate priority is delivering another championship to Los Angeles.
