The Orlando Magic’s decision to name Sean Sweeney as head coach has intensified leaguewide chatter that the franchise could make a run at Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo if he becomes available this offseason, according to a report from Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Sweeney spent four seasons as an assistant in Milwaukee, working closely with Antetokounmpo, and the two-time MVP is said to hold him in high regard. The hire adds to a web of connections already linking Orlando to the Greek forward. Senior advisor John Hammond was the Bucks’ general manager when Antetokounmpo was drafted 15th overall in 2013, and team president Jeff Weltman continues to consult Hammond on basketball matters.
While the Miami Heat are frequently mentioned as a potential destination and the Portland Trail Blazers have reportedly shown interest, Stein noted that the Magic continue to surface in conversations around the league. The report also indicated growing belief that Antetokounmpo’s future could become clearer in the coming weeks, with Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam hoping for resolution near the NBA Draft.
At this stage, any Antetokounmpo movement remains speculative, but Orlando’s latest coaching choice provides yet another link between the franchise and the two-time MVP.
