The Los Angeles Lakers still want LeBron James back next season, but the franchise is expected to focus first on securing a long-term agreement with Austin Reaves, according to The Athletic’s Jovan Buha.
Speaking on his podcast, Buha said the organization would rather commit major money to the 27-year-old guard than extend a short-term, high-priced contract to the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
“If it comes down to whether you’d rather pay Austin $40 million per year for the next five years or LeBron $40 million for one year, they’re going to prioritize the long-term contract,” Buha stated. “Austin is more of a priority for the Lakers than LeBron. That’s just a fact.”
James, 39, has not announced whether he will return for what would be his 24th NBA season. Recent reports have suggested that continuing to compete for championships remains his main motivation if he keeps playing.
Reaves is coming off the best season of his career, averaging 23.3 points per game while completing a rapid rise from undrafted free agent to integral starter. His performance has positioned him as a cornerstone in the Lakers’ future plans.
Los Angeles is still expected to wait for James’s decision before making major roster moves, but Buha’s comments indicate the front office may have already identified its top offseason priority.
