Former Los Angeles Lakers guard and five-time NBA champion Derek Fisher voiced strong confidence that Luka Doncic can guide the franchise to its next title.
Speaking on his program on 97.1 The Fan, Fisher addressed doubts about Doncic’s defense and on-court demeanor. “The short answer is yes,” he said when asked if the 27-year-old could be the centerpiece of a championship roster.
Fisher praised the guard’s late-season push into the MVP conversation, noting both improved effort on defense and elite playmaking. “His court mapping and spatial awareness are next level,” Fisher remarked, adding that Doncic’s passing consistently elevates teammates.
With significant salary-cap room and multiple draft picks, the Lakers plan to reshape the roster around Doncic this offseason. Fisher believes that combination of resources and the star’s style of play will attract free agents.
“You need a superstar that can elevate his teammates,” Fisher said, comparing Doncic’s leadership potential with past Lakers icons Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Magic Johnson. He emphasized that teammates enjoy playing alongside the Slovenian guard.
While critics point to Doncic’s occasional disputes with officials and technical fouls, Fisher stressed that such issues are correctable and do not overshadow his ability to anchor a title run. The organization shares that view, maintaining that winning the championship remains Doncic’s top priority as he enters the 2026-27 campaign.
