The Orlando Magic are close to hiring San Antonio Spurs associate head coach Sean Sweeney as their next head coach, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Sweeney, 39, emerged from a search that also featured veteran coaches Jeff Van Gundy and Billy Donovan. Team executives reportedly traveled to San Antonio during the Western Conference Finals to meet with him, and league sources say he will stay on Gregg Popovich’s staff until the Spurs’ postseason run ends.
Orlando had considered experienced candidates after three consecutive first-round playoff exits but ultimately chose another first-time head coach. Sweeney’s resume includes assistant roles with the Nets, Bucks, Pistons, Mavericks and Spurs. He began his NBA career as a video coordinator in Brooklyn in 2011.
In his lone season as San Antonio’s associate head coach, he helped oversee a defense that climbed from 25th in the league to third.
Once the agreement is finalized, the Bulls, Mavericks and Trail Blazers will remain among the franchises still searching for a head coach this offseason.
